Eight students were admitted to the district hospital in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, after falling ill amidst a severe heatwave gripping the region. The district administration has ordered the closure of all Kasturba schools due to the prevailing extreme heat and humidity. Officials reported that approximately a dozen girls studying at a Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, located on the premises of the District Basic Education Office, suddenly became unwell on Thursday.
Emergency physician at the District Memorial Hospital, Dr. Rishi Srivastava, confirmed that eight girls were brought to the hospital via ambulance. Three of the students were unconscious, while the remaining five were also experiencing symptoms and receiving treatment. The students reportedly complained of fainting, vomiting, and headaches. All affected students are currently in stable condition and undergoing medical care. District Magistrate Vipin Jain stated that following the incident, a team of doctors was dispatched to the Kasturba school to examine the remaining students. Instructions have been issued to declare a holiday in all Kasturba schools within the district due to the intense heat and humidity.
The incident highlights the severe impact of the ongoing heatwave across Uttar Pradesh. Temperatures in many parts of the state have been soaring, leading to a surge in heat-related illnesses. Reports from the region indicate that hospitals have seen a significant increase in patient load, with many cases attributed to heat exhaustion and dehydration. In response to the rising temperatures and health concerns, authorities in Uttar Pradesh have taken measures such as revising school timings, implementing early morning classes, and extending summer vacations to protect students from prolonged exposure to the heat.
Balrampur Hospital, like other medical facilities in the state, has enhanced its preparedness to manage the influx of patients suffering from heat-related ailments. Special measures include the establishment of cold wards, dedicated beds for heatwave patients, and the availability of essential medicines and equipment such as ORS, ice packs, and rectal thermometers. Centralized air conditioning systems are in place to ensure patients do not suffer from the heat within the hospital premises. Additionally, awareness campaigns through posters and banners are being conducted to advise residents on precautions, including avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours and staying hydrated.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for several northern states, with temperatures in many regions exceeding 45 degrees Celsius. The prolonged heatwave conditions are straining daily life, leading to disruptions in normal activities and posing significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations like children and the elderly. Health authorities continue to urge the public to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of extreme weather.
