Chennai and its adjacent regions are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall over the upcoming weekend, offering a potential respite from the prevailing warm and humid conditions. The weather forecast indicates a mixed bag of sunshine and showers, with temperatures hovering around the mid-30s Celsius.

Weekend Weather Outlook

According to meteorological reports, Saturday is anticipated to see partly cloudy skies with a chance of thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon. The maximum temperature is predicted to reach up to 35 degrees Celsius, with the possibility of showers extending into the evening and overnight hours. Sunday is expected to follow a similar pattern, with mostly sunny conditions in the morning giving way to a risk of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Temperatures will remain in a similar range, with highs around 35 degrees Celsius and lows in the mid-20s.

The weather services have indicated that while significant rainfall is not broadly predicted, there is a possibility of localized showers and thunderstorms. These events could bring temporary relief from the heat and humidity that have characterized the region recently. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather advisories as conditions can change rapidly, especially with the potential for thunderstorms.

Extended Forecast and Climate Context

Looking beyond the weekend, the forecast for the upcoming week suggests a continuation of warm temperatures, with highs frequently reaching or exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some areas, particularly inland. While the immediate weekend outlook includes chances of rain, the broader 15-day forecast indicates mostly sunny weather interspersed with cloud cover. Temperatures are expected to rise noticeably, with highs around 40-41 degrees Celsius by mid-week and maintaining that range through the end of May. No severe heatwaves are anticipated, with daily average temperatures expected to remain below the extreme threshold of 45 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is projected to be minimal for the extended period, with a total accumulation of around 25 mm, predominantly expected in mid-May.

The region has experienced fluctuating weather patterns recently. Earlier in May, Chennai and its surrounding districts saw monsoon-like conditions with widespread showers, providing a significant break from the usual summer heat. This was attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar. However, recent reports from late May indicate a return to hotter conditions, with temperatures soaring to 42 degrees Celsius in some parts of the city, making it the highest recorded temperature for the season at that time. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously forecast a hotter May for Tamil Nadu, with the potential for above-normal rainfall offering some relief. Coastal regions and Puducherry were bracing for uncomfortable weather due to high temperature and humidity.

The current forecast suggests a period of warm weather with isolated chances of rain, a pattern that aligns with the typical weather dynamics of the region during this time of year. Residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions to stay cool and hydrated, especially during the peak temperature hours.
