Raghav Chadha Appointed Chairman of Rajya Sabha Committee on Petitions

Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Raghav Chadha has been appointed as the new chairman of the Committee on Petitions within the Upper House of Parliament. The reconstitution of the committee, which includes the nomination of ten members, was announced by the Rajya Sabha chairman.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, succeeding C. P. Radhakrishnan in this capacity, made the nominations. The committee’s reconstitution was effective from May 20. Mr. Chadha’s appointment to lead the Committee on Petitions marks a significant role within the parliamentary oversight mechanism.

The Rajya Sabha Committee on Petitions is a crucial body that examines petitions submitted by the public and various organisations to Parliament. Its mandate includes scrutinising these petitions and recommending appropriate action to the House, thereby serving as a channel for public grievances and proposals to reach the legislative agenda. The committee’s work often involves detailed examination of legislative proposals, administrative actions, and policy matters that are brought to its attention through formal petitions.

The nominated members alongside Chairman Raghav Chadha for this term are Harsh Mahajan, Gulam Ali, Shambhu Sharan Patel, Mayankkumar Nayak, Masthan Rao Yadav Beedha, Jebi Mather Hisham, Subhasish Khuntia, Rwngwra Narzary, and Sandosh Kumar P. This diverse group of parliamentarians will be responsible for reviewing a wide array of petitions presented to the Upper House.

In a separate notification, the Rajya Sabha secretariat announced the nomination of Dr. Menaka Guruswamy, a Member of Rajya Sabha, to the Joint Committee on the Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026. This signifies another instance of parliamentary committee assignments being made concurrently with the reconstitution of other standing bodies.

The Committee on Petitions plays an integral role in the functioning of parliamentary democracy by ensuring that public concerns and suggestions are formally considered. Members of Parliament serving on such committees contribute to legislative scrutiny and policy refinement through their dedicated work. The appointment of a new chairman and members to the Committee on Petitions is a routine process that ensures the committee’s continued effectiveness in addressing matters brought before it.

The Committee on Petitions operates under the rules and procedures of the Rajya Sabha. Its function is to consider representations from individuals or bodies seeking redressal or proposing changes related to laws or government policies. The committee’s recommendations, once presented to the House, can influence legislative action and governmental policy-making, thereby empowering citizens to participate in the democratic process.

Raghav Chadha, who has previously served in various capacities within parliamentary committees, brings his experience to this new leadership role. The functioning of such committees is vital for the robust oversight of executive actions and for ensuring that the concerns of the electorate are adequately addressed by the legislative branch.
