SRINAGAR: Ujala Cygnus, in partnership with Amandeep BR Medicity located at Tengpora Bypass, has achieved a significant milestone in neonatal care by successfully discharging more than 200 critically ill newborns from its advanced Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This achievement offers renewed hope and relief to numerous families across Jammu and Kashmir.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the NICU has provided care for extremely fragile infants, including those with birth weights as low as 600 grams. A substantial proportion of these infants fell into the Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW) category, weighing less than 1.5 kg, and the Extremely Low Birth Weight (ELBW) category, weighing less than 1 kg.
These newborns required intensive, round-the-clock medical attention for complex health issues such as severe respiratory distress, sepsis, and metabolic instability. A notable number of these infants also necessitated advanced respiratory support, including High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV), a specialized mode of ventilation typically reserved for the most critical cases.
The successful outcomes are attributed to the unit’s expertise in managing high-risk and premature newborns, the availability of advanced ventilation strategies, the implementation of Developmental Supportive Care (DSC) to foster neurodevelopmental progress, and the integration of bedside technologies like POCUS (Point-of-Care Ultrasound) and Echocardiography for real-time diagnostic decision-making. Robust infection control and nutritional protocols, coupled with a dedicated multidisciplinary NICU team, have also played crucial roles.
Dr. Altaf Hussain, Head of Department and Consultant Neonatology at Amandeep BR Medicity, commented on the achievement, stating, “Caring for newborns as small as 600 grams requires precision, teamwork, and relentless dedication. This achievement reflects our commitment to bring advanced, compassionate neonatal care to the families of Jammu & Kashmir and give every baby the best possible start in life.”
Dr. Amandeep Kaur, Director of Amandeep BR Medicity, added, “This milestone is a testament to the skill, compassion, and perseverance of our NICU team. Ujala Cygnus, in partnership with Amandeep BR Medicity, remains committed to strengthening advanced neonatal services and ensuring that even the most critically ill newborns receive world-class care close to home.”
The Level III NICU is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and staffed by highly trained medical professionals dedicated to providing the highest standard of care for premature and sick newborns. The unit’s focus extends beyond immediate medical intervention to encompass long-term developmental support, aiming to ensure that these vulnerable infants achieve optimal health outcomes.
The partnership between Ujala Cygnus and Amandeep BR Medicity aims to enhance the availability of specialized healthcare services in the region, particularly in critical areas such as neonatal intensive care. By establishing and operating advanced facilities like the Level III NICU, the collaboration seeks to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the Union Territory for specialized medical treatment, thereby improving access to high-quality healthcare for the local population.
The successful discharge of over 200 newborns underscores the effectiveness of the integrated approach to neonatal care adopted by the facility. This includes early detection of potential complications, prompt intervention with advanced medical technologies, and continuous monitoring and support throughout the infant’s stay in the NICU. The comprehensive care model also emphasizes family involvement and education, empowering parents to better care for their newborns post-discharge.
