The prestigious Sansad Ratna Awards for 2026 have been announced, recognizing outstanding parliamentary performance. Among the distinguished recipients are Medha Kulkarni from Pune and Smita Uday Wagh from Jalgaon, both Members of Parliament from Maharashtra. The awards, instituted to honor exemplary contributions to parliamentary democracy, acknowledge the dedication and diligence of lawmakers based on objective performance data.
The Sansad Ratna Awards, established in 2010 by the Prime Point Foundation on the suggestion of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, celebrate parliamentarians who have excelled in their roles. The selection process is data-driven, utilizing metrics such as the number of debates initiated, Private Member Bills introduced, questions raised, and attendance records. A jury committee, comprising eminent parliamentarians and constitutional authorities, reviews this performance data to determine the awardees strictly on merit.
This year, the jury committee has selected 10 Lok Sabha MPs, 2 Rajya Sabha MPs, and 4 Parliamentary Standing Committees for the Sansad Ratna Awards 2026. Medha Kulkarni, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP representing Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha, and Smita Uday Wagh, also a BJP MP from Maharashtra, are among the notable awardees. Their recognition highlights their significant contributions to legislative proceedings and parliamentary functioning.
Medha Kulkarni, a former Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Kothrud, has been recognized for her performance in parliamentary duties. Prior to her Rajya Sabha tenure, she served as an MLA, demonstrating a consistent commitment to public service.
Smita Uday Wagh, an active politician for over three decades with the BJP, has a robust political background, including leadership roles in the party’s Women’s Wing and as President of the Jalgaon District Council. Her efforts have focused on developmental initiatives, including facilitating dam construction and improving agricultural infrastructure in her constituency. Notably, reports indicate her commitment to parliamentary proceedings even while battling cancer.
The Sansad Ratna Awards have a history of recognizing parliamentary excellence since their inception. The first award ceremony was held in May 2010 in Chennai. Over the years, the award ceremonies have been hosted in various venues, including IIT Madras and, more recently, in New Delhi at the Constitution Club of India and Maharashtra Sadan. Up to the 15th edition held in 2025, a total of 143 awards had been presented to individual Members of Parliament and Parliamentary Standing Committees.
The selection criteria for the Sansad Ratna Awards emphasize objective performance metrics. These include the number of debates initiated, Private Member Bills introduced, questions raised in the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha, and committee reports presented. The jury committee’s decision is final, ensuring a transparent and merit-based selection process.
The Prime Point Foundation, which instituted the awards, aims to acknowledge and honor the hard work and dedication of MPs who contribute to the effective functioning of Parliament. The awards are not conferred by the Government of India but are presented by civil society to celebrate parliamentary achievements. The initiative was inspired by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who envisioned recognizing outstanding performers in Parliament. The awards have been recognized by the India Book of Records and have seen awardees honored by the President and Vice President of India in the past.
The 2026 awardees join a distinguished list of parliamentarians who have been recognized for their contributions. The selection process ensures that the awards reflect genuine parliamentary performance, encouraging members to actively participate in legislative processes and uphold the standards of democratic governance. The inclusion of two women parliamentarians from Maharashtra in this year’s list underscores the growing representation and impact of women in Indian politics.
The Sansad Ratna Awards serve as a testament to the importance of performance-driven recognition in public service, motivating parliamentarians to strive for excellence in their legislative duties and contributing to a more robust and effective parliamentary democracy in India.
