A 26-year-old woman was discovered hanging at her in-laws’ residence in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, approximately six months after her marriage. Her family has lodged a complaint alleging murder due to dowry demands, with claims that her body was subsequently staged to appear as a suicide.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s father, the police have registered a case against the woman’s husband, Bhupendra Pratap Singh, his parents, his brother, and his wife. The charges include offences under Sections 80 and 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to dowry death and cruelty, respectively, as well as provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
The deceased has been identified as Shweta Singh, aged 26. According to Thakurganj Station House Officer Omveer Singh Chauhan, initial reports suggest Shweta allegedly died by hanging herself at her home. Her in-laws reportedly transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The official stated that the accused husband and in-laws are currently absconding. Police are conducting raids to locate and apprehend them. In a statement released by the police, it was confirmed that a written complaint was submitted to the Thakurganj police station on May 25 by the complainant, Umesh Kumar Singh.
The complainant detailed that his daughter, Shweta, also known as ‘Bauua,’ was married to Bhupendra Singh, a resident of Kashi Vihar within the Thakurganj police station area, on November 22, 2025. He further alleged that following the marriage, his daughter endured harassment from her husband and in-laws concerning dowry. Specific demands reportedly included a four-wheeler vehicle.
Umesh Kumar Singh stated that he was informed of his daughter’s death on May 25, with the cause attributed to alleged suicide by hanging. The complainant has accused the husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law of murdering his daughter and then hanging her body to stage a suicide. The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death, officials said.
Dowry-related deaths and domestic cruelty remain significant concerns in various parts of India. The Dowry Prohibition Act, enacted in 1961, criminalizes the giving or taking of dowry. Despite legal provisions, instances of dowry harassment and violence continue to be reported. The BNS, which replaced the Indian Penal Code, also includes stringent provisions against dowry-related offences, aiming to provide stronger legal recourse for victims and their families. The legal framework seeks to deter such practices and ensure justice for those subjected to them. Authorities are often tasked with investigating these cases thoroughly to uphold the law and prevent further occurrences.
The investigation into Shweta Singh’s death is ongoing. Police are gathering evidence, including statements from family members and forensic reports, to establish the circumstances surrounding her death. The prompt registration of the case and the ongoing search for the accused reflect the seriousness with which such allegations are treated by law enforcement agencies in Uttar Pradesh.
