Assamese film ‘Moi Eti Nixhasor’ has achieved international recognition by securing two prestigious awards at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival 2026. The film, directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Bidyut Kotoky, won the awards for ‘Best Dark Comedy’ and ‘Best Editor’. The festival, held in Houston, Texas, is renowned for honoring independent cinema and has previously recognized acclaimed directors such as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

Award-Winning Narrative Explores Resilience and Prejudice

‘Moi Eti Nixhasor’, which translates to ‘Koduwa the Nightbird’, tells the story of Koduwa, a cunning village thief. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of Assam’s socio-political landscape, depicting Koduwa’s journey as he navigates through social unrest and prejudice with wit and resilience. The film’s exploration of human emotions and moral ambiguity has resonated with audiences and critics alike.

The ‘Best Dark Comedy’ award was presented to Kotoky, who expressed his gratitude and noted that the film, while set in a specific Assamese context, touches upon universal themes of social and political challenges faced globally. He remarked that Koduwa’s story, despite its local setting, speaks to a broader audience by highlighting shared human experiences.

The ‘Best Editor’ award was received by Pallavi, Kotoky’s wife, for her work on the film. This marks a significant achievement for the film and its cast and crew, underscoring the technical and artistic merit of the production.

His previous work includes films like ‘Ekhon Nedekha Nodir Xhipare’ (As the River Flows) and ‘Xhoixobote Dhemalite’ (Rainbow Fields), which have also garnered international awards and critical acclaim. ‘Xhoixobote Dhemalite’, for instance, won the Best Foreign Film Award at the Hollywood International CineFest in 2017.

The success of ‘Moi Eti Nixhasor’ at WorldFest-Houston further solidifies the growing presence of Assamese cinema on the global stage. The film’s nominations and awards highlight its unique narrative style and technical quality. The Accolade Global Film Competition had also previously honored ‘Moi Eti Nixhasor’ with an ‘Award of Excellence Special Mention’, placing it among the top entries for its artistry and technical brilliance.

Kotoky, who did not attend film school, has consistently drawn inspiration from his homeland, Assam, and the broader Northeast region of India. His career includes directing short films, documentaries, and television series, often focusing on the cultural and social fabric of the region.

The film ‘Moi Eti Nixhasor’ was written and directed by Kotoky and produced by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) in collaboration with red river & blue hills.
