The Central government has officially notified the NE-5 Expressway, a significant high-speed corridor planned to link the National Capital Region with Jammu and Kashmir. This ambitious infrastructure project, set to traverse Haryana and Punjab, aims to enhance connectivity and facilitate faster movement of traffic and goods across North India.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a notification amending the National Highways Act, 1956. This formal inclusion of the NE-5 corridor into the National Highways network clears the path for essential next steps, including land acquisition, detailed alignment finalization, and subsequent infrastructure development.

The proposed expressway will commence near Rani Khera village in Delhi, intersecting with NH-344M. It will further connect with the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway near Jasaur Kheri village before proceeding through key areas in Haryana and Punjab. The corridor is slated to terminate near Katra in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a crucial link for the region.

In Haryana, the expressway’s path is designated to pass through Kharkhoda, Gohana, Butana, Kalayat, and Barta. Following this, it will enter Punjab, traversing Gulzapur, Patran, Bhawanigarh, Dhuri, Malerkotla, Ahmedgarh, Mullanpur Dakha, Nurmahal, Kangsabu, Kartarpur, the Gurdaspur bypass, and Balsua, ultimately connecting with NH-144 near Katra.

Officials anticipate that the NE-5 Expressway will drastically improve high-speed connectivity between Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. This enhanced linkage is expected to significantly reduce travel durations and streamline logistics operations throughout the northern part of the country. The project is also viewed as a catalyst for improved trade and economic integration, offering better access to the industrial and agricultural belts within Haryana and Punjab.

Infrastructure experts have noted the potential of this corridor to evolve into a vital strategic freight route. Furthermore, it is expected to provide a considerable boost to religious tourism, particularly benefiting pilgrims undertaking journeys to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine located in Katra.

The notification for the NE-5 Expressway aligns with the Centre’s wider strategy to expand the national expressway network and bolster connectivity along key economic and strategic routes across India. Beyond its direct impact on transportation, the project is projected to generate substantial employment opportunities during its construction phase. It is also expected to foster the development of ancillary infrastructure, including roadside amenities, logistics hubs, hospitality services, industrial zones, and commercial activities along its extensive route.

The improved connectivity offered by the expressway is anticipated to stimulate tourism growth and attract investment into smaller towns situated along the proposed corridor, thereby contributing to regional economic development.
