Vellamandi Natarajan, a former Minister in the Tamil Nadu government and a prominent leader of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), has formally joined the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

The Chenab Times has learned that Natarajan’s move comes in the wake of the recent general elections and a perceived internal division within the AIADMK. He expressed his decision to join the TVK, stating that the party respects the legacy of key Dravidian movement leaders.

Natarajan, who had been a significant figure within the AIADMK for a considerable period, stated his reasons for the transition in remarks to The Hindu. He indicated that the current state of the AIADMK, particularly its post-election division, was a factor in his decision. He highlighted the TVK’s acknowledgement and respect for stalwarts of the Dravidian movement, including Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, C.N. Annadurai, M.G. Ramachandran, and J. Jayalalithaa, as a primary motivation for his switch.

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has seen considerable flux in recent times, with various parties seeking to consolidate their positions and attract key personalities. Natarajan’s departure from the AIADMK and subsequent affiliation with the TVK is seen as a notable development in this context. The TVK, founded by actor-turned-politician Vijay, is a relatively new entrant into state politics, aiming to carve out a significant space for itself.

Natarajan’s political career has been marked by his association with the AIADMK, a party he served in ministerial capacities. His decision to leave the party, which has historically been a dominant force in Tamil Nadu politics, suggests a re-evaluation of his political future and alignment with emerging political forces in the state. The AIADMK has recently experienced internal friction, leading to factionalism, which has impacted its organisational strength and electoral prospects in various constituencies.

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, while still in its nascent stages, has been actively working to establish its presence and garner support across the state. The party has been vocal about its political ideology and its commitment to addressing the needs of the people of Tamil Nadu. The induction of experienced leaders like Vellamandi Natarajan is likely to be viewed as a strategic move by the TVK to bolster its leadership ranks and enhance its credibility among the electorate. Natarajan’s grassroots connections and past experience as a minister are expected to contribute to the TVK’s efforts to build a strong organisational base.

The former minister’s comments also alluded to the ideological continuity he perceives in the TVK’s stance on the Dravidian movement’s principles. This suggests a belief that the TVK aligns more closely with the foundational ideals that have shaped Tamil Nadu’s political discourse for decades. The AIADMK, under its current leadership, has faced challenges in maintaining a unified front and projecting a consistent ideological message, which may have contributed to Natarajan’s disillusionment.

The political implications of this switch will likely unfold in the coming months as the TVK continues to expand its outreach and Natarajan integrates into his new political environment. The move underscores the dynamic nature of Tamil Nadu politics, where party affiliations can shift and established leaders often seek new platforms to advance their political careers amidst changing electoral dynamics.
