Two elderly women were discovered dead inside their home in central Delhi’s New Rajinder Nagar on Thursday morning. Police preliminary investigations indicate no signs of forced entry, with age-related ailments suspected as the cause of death.

The deceased have been identified as Saroj Bala, an unmarried woman, and her widowed sister-in-law, Chandra Kanta, both estimated to be around 80 years old. Both women were pensioners and had been living together in the residence for several years, while some of their relatives reside in west Delhi. Information reached the authorities when a domestic helper noticed a foul odour emanating from the house around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the domestic help had prepared and served tea to both women two days prior to their discovery. Joint Commissioner of Police (Central) Madhur Verma stated, “They were senior citizens who were living here alone. Information about the incident was given by the domestic help around 9:30 to 10 am. The same maid had prepared tea for them and served it the day before yesterday.” He further noted that the tea cups were still present, and no indications of a struggle or forced entry were observed.

The bodies have been retrieved and sent for postmortem examinations. Further details are expected to emerge following the receipt of the postmortem reports. Relatives of the deceased, who reside in west Delhi, have been contacted and are currently cooperating with the investigation. The Joint CP indicated that the complete sequence of events will become clearer after the postmortem findings are available.

Upon arrival at the scene, a police team found the two women lying deceased in a room. One was found on a bed, while the other was on the floor, according to an official. The presence of a foul smell suggested that the women may have passed away one to two days prior to their discovery, a timeline corroborated by neighbours who had not seen the women recently.

The residence is a single-storey structure featuring four entry points. A thorough inspection of the premises revealed no signs of forced entry, ransacking, or struggle, the officer confirmed. Investigators are exploring whether the women were suffering from age-related health issues or if they lived in isolation without immediate family support nearby.

Statements from neighbours and local residents are being recorded to establish the timeline and circumstances leading up to the deaths. While no immediate signs of foul play have surfaced during the preliminary inquiry, police are investigating all potential angles, including accidental death and natural medical complications. The investigation is ongoing.
