An elderly man was beaten to death on a moving bus in Chennai following a dispute over reading information on an LED display board. The incident occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, when the victim, identified as 74-year-old Chandrasekaran, engaged in an argument with a co-passenger, identified as 25-year-old Amarnath.
Assault on Moving Bus
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Chandrasekaran, an electrician from Padappai near Tambaram, had boarded a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus on route 70-G from Guduvancheri to Vadapalani. He boarded the bus at the Tambaram MEPZ stop. Amarnath, who works as a mason in Chennai and is a native of Villupuram district, had boarded the same bus earlier at the Tambaram bus stand. The argument reportedly began when Amarnath asked Chandrasekaran to read the place names displayed on the bus’s LED board. Chandrasekaran stated that he could not read it and suggested that Amarnath ask the conductor instead. However, Amarnath persisted, escalating the exchange into a heated verbal argument.
Escalation and Fatal Outcome
The bus conductor intervened in the dispute and asked Chandrasekaran to move to a different seat. As Chandrasekaran attempted to comply and get up, Amarnath allegedly pulled him back. Reports from fellow passengers indicate that Amarnath then proceeded to strangle Chandrasekaran with his bare hands and repeatedly punched him in the face and chest. The severe assault caused Chandrasekaran to collapse inside the bus.
Aftermath and Arrest
The bus driver immediately stopped the vehicle near the Chromepet MIT flyover. Co-passengers rushed Chandrasekaran to the Government Hospital in Chromepet via an auto-rickshaw, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival. Amarnath attempted to flee the scene after the assault but was apprehended by other passengers on the bus. These passengers then handed him over to the Chromepet police. During the initial investigation, Amarnath reportedly appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. He has since been arrested and booked on murder charges. Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
