A rusted mortar shell was recovered and safely defused by security personnel near the Pulastya River in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Saturday. The discovery prompted a swift response from authorities to ensure public safety.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the unexploded ordnance was spotted by a young individual during a morning walk in Jogger’s Park. The park is situated close to the Pulastya River and the Sher-i-Kashmir Bridge on the outskirts of Poonch town.

The vigilant youth immediately alerted the local police about the suspicious object. Following the report, an Army bomb disposal squad was dispatched to the location.

Officials confirmed that security forces quickly cordoned off the area surrounding the discovery site to prevent any untoward incidents. The bomb disposal team then proceeded to defuse the rusted mortar shell. The operation was carried out successfully, and the shell was rendered safe without causing any damage or injury to life.

Following the incident, authorities initiated a thorough inspection of the adjacent areas. This routine security measure aims to ascertain if any other unexploded remnants from past conflicts are present in the vicinity. The recovery highlights the ongoing need for vigilance in areas that have historically seen security operations.

Poonch district, situated along the Line of Control, has occasionally been the site of such discoveries. Security forces remain on alert to address any potential threats posed by abandoned or rusted ordnance, ensuring the safety of residents and preventing accidents.
