SRINAGAR: A tragic incident unfolded in the Langanbal area of Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Sunday, where a 42-year-old man is feared to have drowned in the Lidder River while attempting to rescue his son.
The Chenab Times has learned that Mohammad Ashraf Mir, a resident of Jawahar Nagar in Srinagar and an AC mechanic, had taken his family to Pahalgam for a leisure outing. While they were posing for photographs near the banks of the Lidder River, close to Kolahoi Green Hotel, his son, identified as Fahad, accidentally fell into the fast-moving waters.
Witnesses reported that Mohammad Ashraf Mir, without hesitation, jumped into the river in a desperate bid to save his son. However, the strong current overpowered him, and he was swept away. Locals present at the scene managed to pull the boy to safety. Efforts to locate Mir are ongoing.
Following the incident, local authorities promptly initiated a rescue operation. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed, and rafting teams are actively participating in the search for the missing individual. The strong currents of the Lidder River are posing significant challenges to the ongoing search efforts.
The incident highlights the inherent dangers posed by the swift-flowing rivers in the region, especially during periods of increased water flow. Authorities often issue advisories cautioning the public against venturing too close to riverbanks, particularly in areas with strong currents.
Further details are awaited as the rescue operation continues. The family has been notified and is cooperating with the authorities during this distressing time.
