An explosion and subsequent fire at a defense company facility in Daejeon, South Korea, has resulted in the deaths of five individuals and injured two others. The incident occurred at a worksite operated by Hanwha Aerospace, a prominent South Korean defense and aerospace manufacturer.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the blast was reported around 10:59 AM local time on Monday. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene. Firefighters worked for approximately two hours to extinguish the blaze.
The facility is known to be a key site for Hanwha Aerospace, involved in the development of large propulsion engines and the handling of rocket propellants, as well as tactical surface-to-surface weapon systems. While the exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation, a preliminary assessment by a Hanwha official suggested it may have occurred while workers were cleaning explosive material from tools used in rocket propellant production, possibly involving the use of water.
Of the two injured individuals, one sustained severe burns and was in critical condition, while the other suffered minor injuries. Authorities have stated that the deceased victims have not yet been identified due to the severity of their injuries. The company has issued an apology to the victims and their families and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation to determine the precise cause of the accident.
The site is designated as a government security facility, and authorities faced challenges in obtaining the factory’s layout due to national security laws. This incident is not the first at this particular Hanwha Aerospace facility. Previous explosions involving rocket propellant occurred in 2018, resulting in five fatalities, and again in 2019, which led to three worker deaths. These past incidents underscore the inherent risks associated with the materials and processes involved in the company’s operations.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has called for the mobilization of all available resources to respond to the accident and has ordered a thorough investigation into its cause, along with measures to prevent any recurrence. Relevant government agencies, including the office of Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, have formed a joint response system to manage the aftermath of the incident. The Ministry of Labor has also stated it would conduct a swift inspection and investigation to determine the underlying causes of the accident.
Shares in Hanwha Aerospace experienced a decline in the afternoon trade following the incident, with its holding company, Hanwha Corp., also seeing a drop in its stock value. The company is a significant player in South Korea’s defense industry, producing weapons, artillery systems, and aerospace components. Its Daejeon facility is central to its research and development in advanced weapons technologies and space-related systems.
