Hundreds of lawyers in Himachal Pradesh staged a protest outside the State Secretariat on Thursday, demanding the immediate withdrawal of increased permit fees for sealed roads in Shimla. The demonstration led to a significant disruption of traffic on the Sanjauli-Shimla road, causing considerable inconvenience to commuters.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the legal fraternity voiced strong opposition to what they described as unaffordable hike in charges for sealed road permits, asserting that the state government’s decision was unjustified. The lawyers conveyed their demands to the government and requested a meeting with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to address their grievances.

The protesting lawyers warned of launching a widespread movement across the state if the increased permit fees are not rescinded. The demonstration highlighted a growing discontent among the legal community regarding the new fee structure imposed by the state administration.

The Himachal Pradesh government had recently announced an increase in the permit fees for accessing certain sealed roads within Shimla town. These roads are often designated for specific purposes or to manage traffic flow in congested areas. The revised fee structure, according to the lawyers, has made obtaining these permits prohibitively expensive for legal professionals who may need access for various professional reasons, including attending court proceedings or meeting clients.

The disruption on the Sanjauli-Shimla road, a key artery connecting Shimla town with surrounding areas and the national highway, led to long queues of vehicles and stranded commuters for several hours. The protesters staged their demonstration for an extended period, blocking vehicular movement and drawing the attention of both the public and the administration to their demands.

Sources within the legal fraternity indicated that the lawyers are exploring all possible avenues to get the decision reversed. They feel that the fee hike not only impacts their professional work but also sets a precedent that could affect other segments of the public needing access to restricted areas. The lawyers’ association has been in communication with various bar associations across the state to garner support for their cause, with indications of a potential statewide agitation if their demands are not met promptly.

The Himachal Pradesh Secretariat, being the seat of the state government, is often the focal point for such protests by various groups seeking to voice their concerns directly to the administration. The disruption of traffic on a major road highlights the potential impact of such demonstrations on public life and the importance of finding amicable solutions to disputes between citizens and the government.

While the exact figures of the fee hike were not immediately available, the lawyers’ strong reaction suggests a substantial increase that has been perceived as unreasonable. The Chief Minister’s office has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the lawyers’ demands or the possibility of a meeting.
