Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a significant shift in its political landscape as recent Panchayati Raj election results have dealt a considerable blow to two prominent political families, one affiliated with the Congress and the other with the BJP. The outcomes have not only altered local power dynamics but have also fueled discussions about the potential waning influence of established political dynasties in the region.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that one of the most surprising defeats occurred in the Kotli Zila Parishad ward. Champa Thakur, a Congress leader and the District Congress President, who is the daughter of veteran Congress stalwart Kaul Singh Thakur, lost decisively to BJP candidate Hemlata. Hemlata secured 8,659 votes, while Champa Thakur garnered 6,195 votes, marking a substantial margin of defeat for the latter.
This loss is perceived as a significant blow to the political influence of the Kaul Singh family, which has held sway in Mandi politics for many years. Champa Thakur herself has a long-standing political career at the grassroots level, having been elected to the Zila Parishad from different wards on four occasions and previously serving as the Chairperson of the Zila Parishad, Mandi. She had also twice unsuccessfully contested the Mandi Sadar Assembly constituency against senior BJP leader Anil Sharma. Her father, Kaul Singh Thakur, has also faced electoral defeats in the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections. Political observers suggest that this latest election result points to a gradual erosion of the family’s traditional voter base and their influence among the electorate.
The elections also proved disappointing for former minister and senior BJP leader Mahender Singh Thakur. His daughter, Vandana Guleria, who was the official BJP nominee and a current Zila Parishad member, was defeated in the Tihra ward election in a closely contested race. The Congress candidate, Anita Kumari, emerged victorious with 6,384 votes, narrowly surpassing Vandana Guleria, who received 6,339 votes.
This electoral setback for Mahender Singh Thakur’s family follows another defeat during the 2022 Assembly elections, where his son, Rajat Thakur, lost the Dharampur Assembly seat to Congress candidate Chander Shekhar. These results are being interpreted by political analysts as a clear signal that voters are increasingly prioritizing a candidate’s local performance, accessibility, and connection with the public over their family lineage. The outcome of the Panchayati Raj elections is therefore seen as a strong indication that evolving voter aspirations are reshaping the political landscape and the balance of power within Mandi district.
