Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on Tuesday that the town of Fazil Nagar in the Kushinagar district will be renamed Pawagarh. The decision, made during a government event in Fazil Nagar, aims to honor Jain Tirthankar Lord Mahavir.
The Chief Minister stated that the proposal for renaming Fazil Nagar had been approved and that the town would adopt the new identity of Pawagarh. This renaming is in recognition of its connection to Lord Mahavir, with the new name being derived from Pawapuri in Bihar, a significant Jain pilgrimage site associated with the birthplace of Lord Mahavir. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of preserving cultural heritage and connecting with the region’s ancestral legacy, suggesting that the new name would draw national and international visitors.
During the event, Chief Minister Adityanath also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 278 development projects valued at over Rs 424 crore. He also distributed certificates, sanction letters, and checks to beneficiaries under various government welfare schemes. The ceremony was attended by local public representatives, government officials, and residents.
Fazil Nagar is also noted as the assembly segment previously represented by Swami Prasad Maurya, a former cabinet minister who had been associated with various political parties including the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party. Maurya, who lost the last assembly elections from Fazil Nagar, currently leads his own political outfit, the Rashtriya Shoshit Samaj Party. The Chief Minister’s extensive tour of assembly constituencies across Uttar Pradesh is part of preparations for the upcoming state assembly elections.
