Agra, Uttar Pradesh – In a significant technological leap for law enforcement, the Agra police have successfully apprehended a man wanted for a robbery committed nearly 25 years ago. The breakthrough was achieved through the innovative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and facial recognition technology to track down the absconding accused, identified as Samuel.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the accused had been evading capture since the incident on November 8, 2002, in the Lohamandi area of Agra. Samuel was involved in a loot amounting to Rs 1.75 lakh along with two accomplices, both of whom were apprehended earlier. Despite extensive efforts over the past two and a half decades, police had been unable to locate Samuel, who carried a reward of Rs 50,000 for his arrest.

The primary challenge for the investigators was the lack of recent information about the fugitive. Authorities possessed only a 25-year-old photograph of Samuel, a relic from the time of the crime. To overcome this hurdle, the police employed advanced AI tools to process this old image.

According to officials familiar with the investigation, the AI system was utilized to generate probable updated facial composites based on the original photograph. These AI-generated images were then cross-referenced across various social media platforms. This digital deep-dive aimed to identify individuals whose current appearance bore a strong resemblance to the generated profiles.

The AI-driven search yielded a crucial lead: a photograph of an individual closely matching Samuel’s predicted appearance. This finding prompted the police to delve deeper into the associated social media accounts and digital footprints of the potential suspect.

Further investigation uncovered a traffic challan issued in Delhi. This challan pertained to a car registered in the name of Samuel’s wife, providing a concrete link to his potential presence in the national capital. This piece of evidence was instrumental in narrowing down the search area.

Following the discovery of the traffic challan, a dedicated police team was dispatched to Delhi. For nearly a month, the team conducted discreet surveillance in the Nangloi area, meticulously gathering intelligence and observing potential hideouts. The persistent efforts paid off when Samuel was finally located and arrested on June 1.

Officials disclosed that Samuel had been adept at evading law enforcement by continuously altering his identity, names, and locations over the years. He had reportedly been living in Delhi under an assumed identity for the past few years, moving between several hideouts to remain undetected.

The successful apprehension highlights the transformative potential of modern technology in criminal investigations, particularly in cases involving long-standing fugitives. The use of AI and facial recognition has proven to be a potent tool in overcoming the limitations of time and outdated physical evidence, enabling police to bring offenders to justice even after decades on the run.
