Kuwait International Airport Damaged in Iranian Drone Attack, Flights Suspended

Kuwait International Airport experienced significant damage and a suspension of flights following a drone attack attributed to Iran. Kuwaiti officials reported that the passenger terminal sustained substantial material damage and several individuals were injured in the incident. The Ministry of Defense spokesperson, Brigadier General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, condemned the attack as an act of “criminal Iranian aggression.”

The General Civil Aviation Authority announced the suspension of all commercial flights, with arriving flights being diverted to alternative airports. Technical teams have commenced damage assessment and repair operations. This incident occurred in the context of heightened regional tensions, following reported exchanges of missile strikes between Iran and the United States.

According to reports, Iranian drones targeted Terminal 1 of the airport. While Iran’s Revolutionary Guards did not confirm targeting the airport directly, a statement indicated that in response to a US attack on an Iranian air base, Iranian missiles and drones targeted the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and another location. The US Central Command stated that it had intercepted multiple drones targeting American forces in Kuwait and that Iranian missiles aimed at Kuwait had fallen short or broken apart en route.

Bahrain’s military reported intercepting three Iranian missiles and several drones. The US military also confirmed conducting strikes on an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island in response to attempted attacks across the Middle East. The situation has led to calls for a unified Gulf stance, with an Emirati official emphasizing the interconnected security of the Gulf Cooperation Council states.

Kuwait International Airport had only recently resumed full operations on June 1, after a previous closure due to the Iran war. The attacks have prompted condemnations from various countries and underscore the volatile security situation in the Middle East.
