India has received its fourth squadron of the S-400 Triumf air defence missile system from Russia, significantly enhancing its long-range aerial defence capabilities. The delivery, confirmed by defence sources, marks another step in India’s strategic defence modernization.
The Chenab Times has learned that the system arrived by sea a few days prior to its announcement and is now undergoing induction and integration procedures. This latest consignment is part of a larger contract signed between India and Russia in 2018 for five S-400 squadrons.
With the arrival of this fourth squadron, India has now received a substantial portion of the contracted air defence systems. Three squadrons have already been inducted and strategically deployed across critical sectors of the country. In Indian military parlance, the S-400 system is designated as the ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ air defence platform. It is globally recognized as one of the most advanced surface-to-air missile systems, capable of simultaneously tracking and engaging a wide array of aerial threats. These threats include fighter aircraft, ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and surveillance platforms, with an operational range extending up to 400 kilometers.
Defence sources have indicated that the initial components of the fourth squadron have arrived and its deployment will commence once the entire system is in place. The strategic positioning of previous S-400 deployments has aimed to create a robust, layered air defence network along India’s sensitive borders. These deployments have been concentrated in key areas such as the Punjab-Jammu axis, the Rajasthan-Gujarat region, and the Sikkim sector, providing comprehensive coverage.
The fourth squadron is anticipated to be positioned in the western sector, a move aligned with current threat assessments. This area, particularly the frontier with Pakistan, has been a focus for defence planning following past escalations. The deployment in this region is expected to further strengthen India’s air defence posture against potential aerial incursions and threats.
The S-400 system’s advanced capabilities are designed to provide comprehensive protection against various aerial threats, bolstering national security. Its induction into the Indian Armed Forces is a significant development in the country’s ongoing efforts to enhance its military readiness and technological prowess in air defence.
