SRINAGAR: The body of a Srinagar resident, who had been missing for six days, was recovered from the Lidder River in the Pahalgam area of Anantnag district on Friday, officials confirmed. The discovery followed an extensive search operation launched after the man’s disappearance.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the deceased has been identified as Mohammad Ashraf. His body was spotted by locals in the Aamad area of Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination. Following the sighting, police and rescue teams were promptly dispatched to the scene and successfully retrieved the body from the river.

Mohammad Ashraf had been reported missing approximately a week prior to the recovery of his body. Authorities had initiated search operations across the vicinity to locate him. The recovered body has been sent for medico-legal formalities to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Police have initiated further proceedings to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ashraf’s demise. The Lidder River, known for its strong currents, is a common site for such incidents in the region, especially during periods of increased water flow.

Pahalgam, situated in the Anantnag district of south Kashmir, is a significant tourist hub and a gateway to the Amarnath Yatra. The river flows through scenic valleys and can pose risks to individuals who venture too close or are involved in activities near its banks, particularly during adverse weather conditions or high water levels.

The recovery of the body marks the end of a week-long search and rescue effort. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if the death was accidental or if any foul play was involved. Details regarding the medico-legal report are awaited, which are expected to shed further light on the cause of death.
