Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has mandated strict completion timelines of three to three-and-a-half years for all major infrastructure projects across the state. This directive comes as the Chief Minister’s War Room meeting, held to review key development works, emphasized the critical role of timely project execution in the state’s growth and prosperity.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Fadnavis stressed that the tender process for future projects must incorporate criteria evaluating contractors’ past performance in meeting deadlines. He further warned that departments would refrain from awarding new contracts to contractors responsible for previous delays. This policy aims to ensure accountability and prevent the financial losses incurred by the state and nation due to project postponements.
Accelerated Project Execution and Key Initiatives
The Chief Minister specifically directed officials to expedite work on several significant projects. These include the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel, the Goregaon-Mulund twin tunnel, and the Bandra-Versova Sea Link, all of which are crucial for improving connectivity and reducing traffic congestion within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
Land acquisition for the Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor is also to be accelerated. Additionally, the Chief Minister called for the prompt completion of the Pune Ring Road project. To facilitate further development, authorities were instructed to expedite land allocation for the Mula-Mutha River Rejuvenation Project and ensure adequate water supply to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar by resolving inter-departmental issues.
The redevelopment of the BDD chawls at NM Joshi Marg, Naigaon, and Worli was also a key point of discussion. Fadnavis instructed officials to disburse rent to residents, take immediate possession of their current tenements, and commence construction without delay. Furthermore, he directed government agencies to examine providing state Goods and Services Tax (GST) concessions to industries operating in Dharavi. This initiative is expected to strengthen local enterprises and aid in transitioning Dharavi’s extensive informal economy into the formal sector.
Ensuring Uninterrupted Fuel Supply
In light of potential disruptions, Chief Minister Fadnavis also issued directives to ensure an uninterrupted fuel supply to all infrastructure project sites. This measure is critical to prevent construction activities from being hampered by fuel shortages, thereby supporting the adherence to the newly established project timelines.
Addressing Project Delays and Contractor Accountability
The Chief Minister’s War Room meeting, which reviewed 19 infrastructure projects including six Metro lines in Mumbai, the Sewri-Worli elevated corridor, and redevelopment projects in Dharavi and BDD Chawls, underscored the administration’s commitment to efficient project management. The directive for a three- to three-and-a-half-year completion window signifies a proactive approach to infrastructure development.
The emphasis on contractor performance and accountability is a notable aspect of this new policy. By holding contractors responsible for delays and potentially blacklisting repeat offenders, the government aims to foster a culture of timely project completion and improve the overall efficiency of infrastructure development in Maharashtra.
