SRINAGAR, June 6: Senior leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convened in Srinagar under the chairmanship of party president Mehbooba Mufti to deliberate on the party’s internal functioning and the current political situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting, held at Mufti’s residence on the outskirts of the city, focused on reviewing party affairs and recent political developments.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the gathering at Khimber was attended by prominent party figures including PDP vice president Mohammad Sartaj Madni, parliamentary board chairman Abdul Rahim Veeri, general secretary (organisation) Ghulam Nabi Hanjura, and chief spokesperson Mehboob Beg. Senior leaders Naeem Akhtar, Basharat Bukhari, Mansoor Hussain, and Yasir Reshi also participated. The meeting further included the attendance of three party legislators: Rafiq Ahmad Naik, Fayaz Ahmad Mir, and Waheed Parra.

The PDP spokesman stated that the discussions encompassed the party’s organisational activities and the prevailing political climate within Jammu and Kashmir. This meeting takes place amidst a period of increased political discourse and engagement in the region. The National Conference-led government and the PDP have recently been engaged in exchanges concerning a range of issues, including the development of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Awantipora, broader governance matters, and public accountability initiatives.

The Peoples Democratic Party has been a vocal critic of the administration, headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The party has frequently voiced concerns regarding the government’s perceived shortcomings in addressing critical public issues and ensuring effective governance. The internal party discussions are seen as an effort to consolidate the PDP’s position and strategize its response to the evolving political dynamics in the Union Territory.

The PDP, a significant political force in Jammu and Kashmir, has historically played a key role in state politics, often forming coalition governments. Its leadership’s regular meetings to assess party strategy and the regional political landscape are closely watched as indicators of future political alignments and electoral prospects. The party’s engagement with governance issues and its critique of the incumbent administration underscore its continued efforts to remain a relevant and influential player in the region’s political discourse.

The meeting, by bringing together key leaders from various organisational and legislative wings of the party, aimed to ensure a cohesive approach to addressing the challenges and opportunities within the current political framework. The discussions are expected to guide the party’s public pronouncements and policy stances in the coming period, as it navigates the complex political terrain of Jammu and Kashmir.
