Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced the completion of the survey for the Dhali-Narkanda-Rampur road, which is slated for a four-lane upgrade aimed at enhancing connectivity and promoting tourism in the state. The announcement was made during a visit to the Shimla district.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Chief Minister emphasized the strategic importance of tunnel construction in the project to mitigate risks associated with landslides and ensure the safety of travellers along this vital route. This upgrade is part of a broader initiative by the state government to bolster infrastructure and religious tourism.
During his visit, Chief Minister Sukhu also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the development of the Hatu Mata Ropeway. He stated that the project has been formally proposed under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and, while anticipating a timeline of three to four years for its materialisation, underscored its implementation as a government priority.
Furthermore, funds have been allocated for the improvement of the Hatu Mata road. The Chief Minister specifically highlighted the directive to ensure that these roadworks are carried out with a minimal impact on the local tree cover, while simultaneously enhancing facilities for pilgrims and visitors to the Hatu Mata Temple.
The Chief Minister also announced a financial allocation of Rs 50 lakh for the Narkanda Nagar Panchayat. This allocation comes at a time when the Nagar Panchayat has seen its representatives elected unopposed, signifying a local consensus.
The visit concluded with the Chief Minister being accorded a warm welcome and felicitated by newly elected Panchayati Raj representatives in Narkanda. In a symbolic gesture of environmental commitment, he also planted a sapling in Narkanda.
Among the dignitaries present during these events were MLA Kuldeep Rathore, MLA Dehra, the Chief Minister’s wife Kamlesh Thakur, Vice Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh Forest Development Corporation Kehar Singh Khachi, Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank Devender Shyam, Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, and SP Gaurav Singh, alongside other local officials and community members.
Himachal Pradesh is widely recognised for its rich cultural heritage, particularly its ‘Dev culture,’ with its residents holding deep-seated faith in their local deities. The state government has been actively focusing on promoting religious tourism, leveraging the presence of numerous revered temples to attract visitors. The infrastructure developments, including the four-lane highway project and the proposed ropeway, are intended to complement these efforts by improving accessibility to key religious and tourist destinations.
The Dhali-Narkanda-Rampur road serves as a crucial link for accessing several areas in the Shimla district, including popular tourist spots and regions known for their religious significance. Enhancing this artery to a four-lane standard is expected to reduce travel times, improve road safety, and potentially boost economic activity in the surrounding areas through increased tourism and trade. The emphasis on tunnels is a direct response to the geographical challenges of the region, which is prone to heavy snowfall and landslides during the monsoon and winter seasons.
The Hatu Mata Temple, located at a high altitude, is a significant pilgrimage site. Improving access to this temple, as well as the development of a ropeway, aims to make the journey more convenient for devotees and tourists alike, while also potentially creating new avenues for local employment and economic development. The commitment to preserving the natural environment during these development projects, particularly the focus on minimising tree felling, reflects an emerging trend in infrastructure development that seeks to balance progress with ecological conservation.
The allocation to the Narkanda Nagar Panchayat is seen as a measure to support local governance and development initiatives within the panchayat. The unopposed election of representatives in Narkanda suggests a period of stability and local agreement on governance matters.
The Chief Minister’s engagements throughout the day underscored the state government’s multifaceted approach to development, encompassing infrastructure, tourism promotion, and environmental stewardship, all aimed at enhancing the quality of life for the residents of Himachal Pradesh and attracting visitors to its scenic and culturally rich landscapes.
