SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday called for the immediate release of party leader and tribal activist Talib Hussain, alleging that he had been taken into custody for protesting against a demolition drive in Jammu’s Sidhra area.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that Mufti expressed her concern on social media, describing Hussain’s arrest as unfortunate and asserting that he was being treated as a criminal despite his advocacy for the rights of marginalized tribal communities.

Mufti stated that Hussain was specifically targeted for organizing a peaceful demonstration against an allegedly arbitrary demolition drive conducted in Sidhra. She questioned the rationale behind the action taken against him, emphasizing his role as a voice for the underprivileged.

The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir further suggested that the treatment of the PDP leader could send a negative message to the Gujjar and Bakerwal communities, which she highlighted have historically contributed to and supported the nation. She maintained that these tribal communities are deserving of justice and equitable treatment.

In her appeal, Mufti urged the authorities to intervene in the matter and ensure the prompt release of Talib Hussain. The statement did not include details regarding the specific charges or legal proceedings against Hussain.
