Jammu and Kashmir Police Seize 20 Vehicles in Crackdown on Illegal Mining

SRINAGAR: Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have intensified their campaign against illegal mining, leading to the seizure of 20 vehicles involved in the unauthorized extraction and transportation of minerals across the districts of Ganderbal and Shopian.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that police teams carried out targeted enforcement operations, apprehending vehicles found in violation of mining laws and regulations. The actions are part of a sustained effort to curb illicit activities that threaten natural resources and environmental stability.

In the Ganderbal district, police personnel on routine patrol intercepted nine vehicles suspected of carrying construction material illegally. Upon inspection, it was confirmed that the vehicles were transporting mining material without the necessary permits or authorization, contravening established norms. Following the seizure, the matter was escalated to the Geology and Mining Department for further action, including the imposition of penalties as stipulated by law.

Simultaneously, enforcement operations in Shopian district also yielded significant results. A coordinated effort by the Shopian police led to the interception of nine tippers and dumpers that were proceeding from Pulwama towards Shopian. These vehicles were found to be carrying mining material without valid royalty documents, prompting their immediate seizure.

The Shopian police registered a First Information Report (FIR) numbered 107/2026 at Police Station Shopian under the relevant sections of law, initiating a formal investigation into the matter. The objective is to identify all individuals involved in the illegal mining chain and ensure accountability.

In a separate development within the Shopian district, a police team operating from Police Post Berthipora seized two tractors. These tractors were reportedly engaged in the unauthorized extraction and transportation of minerals without possessing the requisite permissions. Consequently, FIR No. 62/2026 was lodged at Police Station Keller, and investigations are currently in progress to ascertain the full extent of the operation.

A police spokesperson reiterated the commitment of the Jammu and Kashmir Police to protect the region’s natural wealth and to take stringent legal measures against those found participating in illegal mining and the unlawful transport of minerals. Authorities have emphasized that such activities will not be tolerated and that enforcement actions will continue unabated across the valley.

The police have also appealed to the public to extend their cooperation by reporting any instances of illegal mining activities they may witness. Assurances have been given that the identities of informants will be kept strictly confidential to encourage reporting without fear of reprisal. This collaborative approach is seen as vital in effectively combating illegal mining operations.
