A 28-year-old law graduate has died and a woman was hospitalized following medical emergencies at a crowded techno music concert in Worli, Mumbai. The incident, which occurred on Saturday night during the ‘Klangkuenstler All Night Long’ event at the NSCI Dome, has led to the Tardeo police registering a case against two senior executives of the event management firm, Space Bound Web Labs Private Limited, on charges of negligence.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the deceased, identified as Vrishabh Mahendra Gangurde, a resident of Mahim, collapsed during the event. He was rushed to Breach Candy Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival. Simultaneously, a 31-year-old woman attending the same concert also fell ill and was admitted to Jaslok Hospital, where her condition has since stabilized.
According to the FIR filed by Gangurde’s elder brother, Dr. Tanmay Gangurde, the organizers’ alleged failure to provide timely medical assistance contributed to the death. The FIR has named Karan Singh, CEO, and Parag Uke, senior manager of Space Bound Web Labs, booking them under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence. Police sources indicated that while alcohol was served at the venue, and the hospitalized woman stated she consumed alcohol and energy drinks, there has been no evidence of drug consumption found so far.
The investigation is examining multiple angles, including the role of excessive alcohol consumption, potential underlying medical conditions, and the possibility of inadequate ventilation at the venue, which attendees described as “suffocating” due to the large crowd. Some attendees also reported restrictions on mobile phone usage inside the venue.
Police have recorded statements from approximately 20 individuals, including the event organizers and NSCI Dome officials. CCTV footage and other electronic evidence are being scrutinized as part of the ongoing probe. Post-mortem examination of the deceased was conducted at Nair Hospital, with doctors reserving their final opinion on the cause of death pending the receipt of toxicology and forensic reports from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina.
This incident has reignited concerns about safety protocols and crowd management at large public events in Mumbai, particularly following a previous tragedy in April where two MBA students died of a suspected MDMA overdose at a music concert in Goregaon. Authorities are emphasizing the mandatory nature of emergency medical arrangements and adequate safety measures for such gatherings.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena stated that investigations are ongoing, with all possible angles being examined, including reviewing CCTV footage, medical reports, and witness statements. The police have emphasized that those found responsible will face strict action.
The ‘Klangkuenstler All Night Long’ event is part of a concept by German DJ and producer Klangkuenstler, known for industrial techno and heavy Schranz-infused music, attracting a dedicated electronic music fanbase. The event reportedly drew thousands of attendees, with ticket prices ranging from Rs 3,000 upwards.
The Tardeo police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and launched a detailed probe into the matter. The investigation aims to ascertain the exact cause of death and to determine if any negligence on the part of the organizers led to the tragic outcome. The legal action taken against the event organizers underscores the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations and ensuring adequate preparedness for medical emergencies at large-scale public events.
