Iran Claims FIFA Revokes World Cup Ticket Allocation Amid Diplomatic Tensions

The Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) announced on Tuesday that its allocation of World Cup tickets for supporters has been revoked, days before the tournament’s commencement. The federation stated that it had already begun selling tickets for Iran’s group stage matches, but is now unable to provide any to its fans.

According to the FFIRI, each participating federation is entitled to 8% of stadium capacity for each match to distribute among their supporters. The federation claimed that this sudden withdrawal of tickets is contrary to the principles of international competitions and equality among participating nations. The FFIRI has urged FIFA and tournament organizers to uphold neutrality, fairness, and established regulations to ensure Iranian supporters can attend the games.

This development adds another layer of complexity to Iran’s participation in the World Cup, which has already been marred by diplomatic tensions and visa issues. Reports indicate that the United States has presented several bureaucratic hurdles for Iran, including visa denials for some administrative and support staff. These tensions have led Iran to move its World Cup training base from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico.

Iran is scheduled to play its opening match against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, followed by games against Belgium in Los Angeles on June 21 and Egypt in Seattle on June 26. The FFIRI has raised concerns that non-sporting and political considerations may be influencing the organization of the tournament.

While FIFA and U.S. organizers have not yet publicly commented on the Iranian accusation, reports suggest that FIFA is working with the FFIRI to find solutions that would allow Iranian supporters to attend the matches. The FFIRI stated that many Iranian fans, relying on the officially announced process, had already made travel arrangements, making the ticket revocation particularly disruptive.
