SRINAGAR: A special police officer has been disengaged from service in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir for his alleged involvement in a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The Chenab Times has learned that the Baramulla Police took the action against Special Police Officer (SPO) Khalid Nazir Khan, a resident of Katipora, Tangmarg, with immediate effect. The disengagement follows his alleged participation in an NDPS case.

According to official sources, the incident leading to the action occurred on April 23 of this year during a naka checking at Wussan Crossing in the Kunzer area of north Kashmir. Police intercepted a vehicle, and its occupants, including the SPO, were found to be in suspicious circumstances.

A search of the vehicle and its occupants reportedly led to the recovery of syringes, needles, and a silver foil paper commonly used for the consumption of narcotic substances. This discovery prompted the registration of a case under various sections of the NDPS Act.

The police stated that in light of the SPO’s alleged serious involvement in the drug-related case and conduct deemed unbecoming of a member of a disciplined force, the decision was made to disengage him from his services.

The disengagement of personnel accused in drug-related offenses underscores the administration’s stance against the infiltration of illicit substances within its ranks and the broader community. Such actions are intended to maintain the integrity of law enforcement agencies and ensure public trust.

The NDPS Act aims to control and regulate operations relating to narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, with stringent penalties for violations. Cases registered under this act often involve extensive investigations into the supply chain and consumption of illegal drugs.

The area of Tangmarg, situated in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, has seen sporadic instances of law enforcement actions related to drug seizures in the past. The administration has been intensifying efforts to curb the flow of narcotics, which are often linked to other forms of criminal activity.

The disengagement process for SPOs, who are engaged on a contractual basis, is typically initiated when their conduct is found to be in contravention of service rules or involves criminal allegations. This measure serves as a deterrent against malpractices within the police force.
