Four gates of the Prakasam Barrage in Andhra Pradesh were opened on Monday to release approximately 3,000 cusecs of water downstream. The decision was made following an increase in water inflow from the local catchment area due to recent rainfall.

Surplus Discharge Management

The gates were opened between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. to manage the surplus water accumulating in the reservoir. Officials stated that the increased inflow necessitated the controlled release of water to maintain safe levels within the barrage.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the Prakasam Barrage, a significant structure for irrigation and water supply in the region, often sees its gates operated during periods of heavy rainfall. The current discharge of 3,000 cusecs is considered a routine measure to prevent potential flooding in downstream areas and to regulate water levels for agricultural and domestic needs.

The barrage, located near Vijayawada, spans the Krishna River and is a vital component of the state’s water management infrastructure. It plays a crucial role in providing water for the Krishna delta, a fertile agricultural region, as well as supplying drinking water to several towns and cities, including Vijayawada itself.

The operation of the gates is a regular occurrence during the monsoon season and periods of significant rainfall in the river’s catchment areas. The precise amount of water released is determined by the prevailing inflow and the storage capacity of the reservoir. The decision to open the gates is typically made by the barrage authorities based on real-time monitoring of water levels and weather forecasts.

This controlled release ensures that the water is channeled safely into the river, minimizing risks to nearby settlements and infrastructure. The water released downstream can also contribute to replenishing groundwater levels and supporting ecosystems along the river banks. The management of water resources through structures like the Prakasam Barrage is a critical aspect of ensuring agricultural productivity and water security for the population of Andhra Pradesh.

The authorities responsible for the barrage closely monitor the water levels and inflow, coordinating with meteorological departments and disaster management agencies to anticipate and respond to changing conditions. The opening of the gates is a testament to the proactive measures taken to safeguard against potential water-related challenges and to optimize the use of available water resources.
