Three slum clusters located near the Prime Minister’s official residence in the Race Course area of Lutyens’ Delhi were demolished on Sunday, officials confirmed. The action was taken following a directive from the Delhi High Court, which also mandated the rehabilitation of the displaced residents.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the court’s order specifically targeted the Bhai Ram camp, DID camp, and Masjid Camp. The court had instructed authorities to establish grievance redressal camps at the rehabilitation sites, ensuring a structured approach to the relocation process.
The land on which these settlements were located is reportedly owned by the Land and Development Office (L&DO). The demolition drive was conducted with the cooperation of various administrative bodies. According to an official statement, residents from these clusters have been allocated new residences in Narela, a locality in North Delhi.
The relocation and demolition efforts were initiated subsequent to the High Court’s pronouncement. While the authorities maintained that residents’ concerns regarding the shift were being addressed, the process involved significant logistical arrangements. The land has been deemed necessary for enhancing security and defence infrastructure around the sensitive VVIP zone.
To ensure the smooth execution of the drive and maintain order, substantial security personnel were deployed to the site. A senior police officer confirmed the presence of a combined force of police and paramilitary units to uphold law and order during the demolition and relocation operations. The court’s intervention underscores the administrative and security considerations associated with prime real estate in the national capital.
