SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has mandated that all private water filling stations operating within the Jammu division must complete their registration with the relevant authorities within a period of ten days. This directive aims to establish a comprehensive registry of these facilities and enhance regulatory oversight of water distribution services across the region.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the directive was issued by Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology, Environment and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana. The move is intended to ensure stringent quality control, bolster accountability mechanisms, and streamline the provision of potable water, particularly during peak demand periods such as the summer months.
Officials stated that maintaining an up-to-date database of private water filling stations will empower authorities to monitor their operations more effectively. This measure is designed to safeguard public interests by ensuring that all facilities adhere to prescribed quality and safety standards for water supply.
Minister Rana issued these directions while presiding over a review meeting with officials from the Jal Shakti Department. The meeting focused on assessing the preparedness and measures being implemented to address summer water demands and to strengthen the region’s readiness for the upcoming monsoon season.
During the meeting, the minister reviewed the progress of various initiatives aimed at ensuring an uninterrupted supply of drinking water. Enhancing flood management capabilities and reinforcing the department’s response mechanisms to effectively manage any eventualities were also key points of discussion, according to officials.
Highlighting the critical need to address the issue of declining groundwater tables and increasingly erratic precipitation patterns, Mr. Rana emphasized that rainwater harvesting should be integrated as a fundamental component of water resource planning throughout Jammu and Kashmir. He called for a significant shift in current water management practices.
The minister further stressed the importance of strictly enforcing the mandate requiring the integration of rainwater harvesting infrastructure in all newly constructed government buildings. This aims to promote sustainable water resource management at the foundational level of infrastructure development.
Additionally, Mr. Rana directed officials to undertake systematic monitoring of groundwater levels across all districts in close collaboration with the Central Ground Water Board. This collaborative effort is intended to ensure that timely corrective actions are implemented based on the assessments and data gathered. He underscored that regular monitoring and data-driven interventions are indispensable for sustainable groundwater management and effective planning to mitigate emerging water stress scenarios.
The minister instructed the officers to maintain a high level of operational preparedness and ensure that all necessary arrangements are in place to effectively tackle challenges arising from water scarcity, heatwave conditions, and potential flood threats during the monsoon period. He urged prompt action on restoring repairable hand pumps across Jammu Division and reviving defunct borewells without delay.
Mr. Rana also directed the departmental officers to identify and implement all essential flood protection measures. This includes the construction of protective walls and other structural interventions aimed at safeguarding vital water supply infrastructure from potential damage caused by future floods.
