Jammu Woman Dies in Fire, Family Alleges Foul Play, Protests Erupt

Jammu, June 14: A woman died under mysterious circumstances in a fire incident at her in-laws’ residence in Akhnoor, Jammu district, prompting her family to block a road and demand a thorough investigation into her death. The incident occurred on the intervening night of June 13 and 14.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the deceased has been identified as Poonam Kalsi. Her maternal family alleged that they were not immediately informed about the fire and her subsequent death by her in-laws, raising suspicions about the nature of the incident.

The uncle and brother of Poonam Kalsi told reporters outside the sub-district hospital Akhnoor that they were only informed about the incident the following morning. They stated that Poonam had visited her maternal home for two days and had left for her in-laws’ house on Saturday. Her brother confirmed he had dropped her off at Sungal Morh on her way to her marital home.

The protesting family members claimed that Poonam Kalsi had been subjected to regular harassment by her in-laws, specifically her father-in-law and mother-in-law. These allegations, however, have not been officially corroborated.

The road blockade by the relatives caused significant disruption to traffic in the Akhnoor area. Senior officials from the police and civil administration were dispatched to the scene to address the protesters and persuade them to end their demonstration.

Following the incident, the police have registered a case and commenced an investigation into the death. Further details are awaited as the inquiry progresses.
