A body of a 20-year-old woman was recovered from a power canal in the Gund area of Kangan, Ganderbal district, on Monday, while rescue operations are ongoing for a man feared drowned at the same location.

The Chenab Times has learned that the incident occurred in the power canal near Gund, where two individuals reportedly drowned. Following the incident, emergency services, including police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local volunteers, were immediately dispatched to the scene. They initiated an extensive search operation along the canal.

After several hours of diligent searching, rescue teams successfully recovered the body of the young woman from the canal. The search for the second missing person, a man, continued throughout the day and into the evening, with teams combing the canal and its surrounding areas. As of the time of filing the report, the man remained untraced.

The power canal in the Kangan area, particularly near Gund, is known to have strong currents, especially during periods of increased water flow. Local authorities often issue advisories regarding swimming or venturing too close to such water bodies, particularly during the monsoon season or times of heavy snowmelt. Incidents of drowning, though infrequent, have been reported in similar waterways across the region, prompting authorities to reiterate safety precautions.

Ganderbal district, situated in the heart of Jammu and Kashmir, is characterized by its picturesque landscapes and numerous water bodies, including rivers and canals that are vital for irrigation and power generation. While these water resources contribute to the region’s natural beauty and economy, they also pose inherent risks if proper safety measures are not observed. The recent recovery of the body and the ongoing search for the missing individual underscore the importance of adhering to safety guidelines near such natural water channels.

The local administration has pledged full support to the families of the affected individuals and has mobilized all available resources for the ongoing search operation. The SDRF, equipped with specialized rescue gear, is leading the efforts to locate the missing man. Officials have urged the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary risks around water bodies.
