CHANDIGARH: Syed Abid Rashid Shah, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from Jammu and Kashmir, has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of the Health and Medical Education Department in Chandigarh.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that this assignment is a temporary measure, intended to ensure the continuity of departmental operations until the regular incumbent officer returns. Mr. Shah, a 2012-batch IAS officer belonging to the AGMUT cadre, currently holds the positions of Secretary for Tourism and Culture, as well as Managing Director of the Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO).
The handover of additional duties underscores the administration’s commitment to maintaining essential public services without interruption. Officials have stated that Mr. Shah will continue to manage his existing portfolios while also overseeing the Health and Medical Education Department. This arrangement will remain in effect pending further directives from the administration.
Mr. Shah was previously relieved from his duties in Jammu and Kashmir by the General Administration Department on February 20, 2026, to facilitate his posting in the Union Territory of Chandigarh. His administrative experience is expected to contribute to the effective management of the health sector during this transitional period.
The Health and Medical Education Department plays a critical role in public health delivery, overseeing various healthcare facilities, policy implementation, and medical education initiatives within Chandigarh. The additional charge aims to prevent any lapse in governance or service delivery from this vital department.
This development highlights the mobility and cross-functional roles assigned to IAS officers within the AGMUT cadre, which covers Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and the Union Territories. Officers are often posted to different regions within the cadre to gain diverse administrative experience and to fill crucial roles as needed.
