Noida Airport Appoints Interim CEO After Swiss Chief Denied Security Clearance

Noida International Airport has appointed its Chief Financial Officer, Nitu Samra, as the interim Chief Executive Officer. This leadership change comes after the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) denied security clearance to the airport’s previous CEO, Christoph Schnellmann, a Swiss national.

Regulatory Hurdle for Operational Launch

The denial of security clearance to Schnellmann, who had been leading the airport since August 2020, has directly impacted the timeline for the commencement of flight operations at the recently inaugurated greenfield airport. According to a directive from the BCAS, the CEO of any airport in India must be an Indian citizen. This rule is tied to aviation safety oversight, as the CEO is designated as the security coordinator responsible for implementing security measures.

Leadership Transition and Continuity

Nitu Samra, who has been serving as the Chief Financial Officer of Noida International Airport since October 2021, will hold the interim CEO position until the Board of Directors finalizes a formal selection process for a permanent CEO. Samra has been significantly involved in the airport’s financial management, governance, and strategic planning during its critical development phases. Christoph Schnellmann will transition to the role of Executive Vice Chairman on the airport’s Board of Directors, where he will continue to support the project and its move towards operational readiness.

Airport’s Progress and Future Operations

The Noida International Airport, located in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 28, 2026. The airport received its aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in March, but the Aerodrome Security Programme (ASP) approval from BCAS is still pending. Samra’s appointment is expected to expedite this final clearance, paving the way for commercial flight operations to commence. Reports indicate that commercial flights are anticipated to begin by mid-June 2026, with initial operations expected to be carried out by IndiGo, followed by Akasa Air and Air India Express.

Background of the Project

The development and operation of the Noida International Airport are managed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG. The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 11,200 crore, is designed to handle an initial passenger capacity of 12 million passengers per annum, with plans for scalability to accommodate up to 70 million passengers per annum in later stages. The leadership change ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, a crucial step as the airport prepares to become a significant aviation hub for the National Capital Region and North India.
