MUMBAI: Hundreds of students in Maharashtra seeking admission to First Year Junior College (FYJC) have faced a significant setback as their allotted seats have been revoked. The cancellations occurred due to an error in the admission process, where revised marks from the Class 10 re-evaluation were not initially incorporated into the merit lists.
The issue came to light after the first allotment list was released, revealing that many students who had secured seats based on their original marks were subsequently removed once the discrepancy was identified. The admission process had inadvertently used the original examination marks instead of the updated scores from the re-evaluation of Class 10 board examinations. This oversight impacted the merit rankings of numerous students, leading to a reshuffling of seat allocations across various junior colleges in the state.
The School Education and Sports Department acknowledged the error, with the Director of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Mahesh Palkar, stating that the revised merit list was published on the same day the initial list was announced. This correction led to approximately 100 to 150 students being displaced from their initially secured seats. Palkar explained that students whose marks increased after re-evaluation were allocated seats based on their new merit standing, which naturally affected those who had previously secured a seat.
The abrupt cancellation of seats has caused considerable anxiety and distress among students and their parents, many of whom had already completed the admission formalities based on the first allotment. Some students reported arriving at colleges for admission confirmation only to be informed that their names were no longer on the revised list, preventing them from securing their spot.
Affected candidates have urged education authorities to ensure a transparent and fair resolution to prevent their academic year from being jeopardized. Officials are expected to address the discrepancy by revising the admission process to accurately incorporate the updated marks and issue fresh allotment lists where necessary. Students have been advised to stay vigilant and regularly monitor the official FYJC admission portal for the latest updates and revised schedules regarding their admissions.
This situation highlights the challenges in managing large-scale admission processes, especially when dealing with data from re-evaluation examinations. The Maharashtra FYJC admission process is a critical annual exercise for students seeking admission to Class 11 courses across government, aided, and private junior colleges throughout the state, with allocations typically based on Class 10 scores and reservation policies.
