Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday initiated the construction of a crucial link road along the Dhussi Bandh in Shahkot, a significant infrastructure project costing Rs 61.82 crore, aimed at reinforcing the embankment ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.
The Chenab Times has learned that the Chief Minister addressed a Lok Milni gathering at Shahkot, where he highlighted the state government’s commitment to mitigating flood-related risks. He stated that the impact of floods this year is anticipated to be significantly reduced due to the ongoing surface water irrigation project being implemented across Punjab.
In his address, Chief Minister Mann also reiterated his government’s firm stance against sacrilege incidents, assuring stringent action under the newly enacted anti-sacrilege law. He expressed the government’s dedication to ensuring that culprits involved in such cases do not evade justice, emphasizing that the new legislation provides for life imprisonment and a substantial fine of Rs 50 lakh, aimed at deterring such acts.
Turning his attention to the flood-prone region and the newly inaugurated link road project, Mann underscored the efficacy of preventive measures. He articulated that prevention is a more effective strategy than post-disaster compensation, stating that the work on the Dhussi Bandh is designed to serve as a crucial preventative measure. The primary objective, he explained, is to safeguard the region from the devastating effects of floods, rather than merely disbursing compensation after the damage has occurred.
The Chief Minister also directed the Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner to meticulously oversee the project, ensuring that only the highest quality materials are utilized in its construction. This directive underscores the administration’s focus on durability and long-term effectiveness of the infrastructure.
Expressing optimism for the agricultural sector, Mann conveyed his hopes for a favourable farming season. He offered prayers for the safe arrival of crops at the mandis this year, free from any damage, and for farmers to receive fair remuneration for their produce. He further elaborated on the expected improvements in the flood situation, attributing it to the substantial increase in the utilization of surface water for irrigation purposes.
Mann detailed the progress in water resource management, noting that the utilization of surface water for irrigation has seen a dramatic increase. Previously, only 22% of surface water was used for irrigation, a figure that has now surged to 80%, signaling a significant shift towards sustainable water management practices in the state.
The foundation stone laid by Mann marks the commencement of the 37.93-kilometer-long Dhussi Bandh Link Road project. This initiative is projected to bring substantial benefits to the residents of more than 15 villages situated in the vicinity of the Dhussi Bandh, enhancing their safety and security against potential flooding.
Among those present at the project inauguration ceremony were Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and several other dignitaries, highlighting the importance of the project and the collective support it garnered from various stakeholders.
