Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Nitin Nabin arrived in Amritsar on Saturday, marking his first visit to Punjab since assuming leadership of the party’s highest office. His three-day tour includes participation in a range of religious, social, and organizational events across Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that this visit is part of the BJP’s strategic initiative to bolster its presence in Punjab’s political arena, with the party aiming to contest all 117 assembly seats in the 2027 elections. Nabin’s presence is intended to invigorate the party cadre and assess the organizational readiness for the upcoming assembly elections, scheduled for early next year.
The tour coincides with a significant organizational development: the recent appointment of Kewal Singh Dhillon, a prominent Jat Sikh leader, as the state unit president. This move marks the first instance where the BJP has chosen a Jat Sikh to lead its state unit in Punjab, a decision widely perceived as a strategic effort to appeal to a crucial voting demographic ahead of the 2027 polls.
Upon his arrival at Amritsar airport in the afternoon, Nabin was accompanied by BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh. He was welcomed by Punjab BJP president Dhillon, former state unit chief Sunil Jakhar, and a contingent of other party leaders. Nabin’s itinerary included a visit to the Golden Temple for prayers, as well as visits to historical and religious sites such as Jallianwala Bagh, Durgiana Mandir, and Sri Ram Tirath Mandir.
The national president is scheduled to travel to Jalandhar, where party workers and supporters are preparing to greet him. A key event during his visit will be his participation in International Yoga Day celebrations on June 21 at Lovely Professional University in Phagwara.
Following these engagements, Nabin is set to proceed to Ludhiana. In Ludhiana, he will inaugurate the district BJP office located on Dugri Road. This will be followed by an address to a meeting of sub-circle incharges and senior party functionaries, aimed at aligning strategic priorities and operational plans.
Later in the evening, Nabin is slated to engage with industrialists and members of the business community in Ludhiana. This interaction is expected to facilitate discussions on economic policies and the BJP’s vision for industrial development in the state.
The second day of his visit, June 22, will involve a series of crucial meetings. Nabin is scheduled to meet with Members of Parliament, former MPs, MLAs, and former MLAs. He will also interact with youth representatives, underscoring the party’s focus on engaging with younger demographics and future leaders.
Further engagements include participation in a youth conclave and holding meetings with state office-bearers, district presidents, and members of the BJP Punjab core group. These sessions are critical for reviewing party strategy, addressing organizational challenges, and formulating plans for strengthening the BJP’s electoral prospects in Punjab.
The BJP’s concerted efforts to expand its electoral base in Punjab come as the party seeks to establish a stronger foothold in a state where it has historically been a junior partner in alliances. The party’s ambition to contest all 117 assembly seats independently in 2027 necessitates a significant mobilization of its cadre and a robust outreach to various community groups. Nabin’s visit is a significant step in this direction, signaling the party’s serious commitment to its growth strategy in the state.
