Six members of a family had a narrow escape from a potential tragedy on Saturday evening when a speeding container truck allegedly collided with their car and dragged it for approximately 100 metres on National Highway-1 near Sugar Mill Chowk in Phagwara.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the family was travelling from Amritsar to Chandigarh. The incident occurred as their vehicle approached Sugar Mill Chowk. A container truck, reportedly moving from behind, is alleged to have struck the car while attempting an unsafe manoeuvre. The force of the impact caused the car to be dragged along the highway for a significant distance, resulting in substantial damage to the vehicle.
Despite the severity of the collision, all occupants of the car sustained only minor injuries and were understandably shaken by the ordeal. The car itself suffered extensive damage to its body and bumpers, with debris scattered across the road surface.
Upon receiving information about the accident, officials from the Punjab Road Safety Force and local traffic police, led by Inspector Aman Kumar, promptly arrived at the scene. The authorities worked to clear the roadway of vehicle parts and debris, quickly restoring traffic flow and averting prolonged disruption on the busy highway.
Initial investigations suggest that the collision may have taken place during an overtaking attempt by the container truck driver. Police officials have recorded statements from the individuals involved and have initiated a detailed examination of the circumstances that led to the crash.
A case has been registered against the driver of the container truck under the relevant legal provisions. Further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the precise cause of the accident and to assign responsibility.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding road safety on national highways, particularly with regard to the speed and manoeuvring of heavy vehicles. Authorities are expected to focus on enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring driver accountability to prevent future occurrences of this nature.
Investigations are continuing, and police are gathering evidence to build a comprehensive case. The family, though traumatized, is cooperating with the authorities as they seek justice and clarity on the events that transpired.
The restoration of traffic on NH-1 was a priority for the local administration, with efforts made to minimize inconvenience to commuters. The swift response from the Punjab Road Safety Force and traffic police was crucial in managing the aftermath of the accident.
