A new human milk bank has been inaugurated at the Cuddalore Government Medical College and Hospital in Tamil Nadu, aiming to provide crucial breast milk to vulnerable newborns. This initiative, established under the Department of Paediatrics, is designed to ensure that infants who are unable to feed directly from their mothers receive essential nutrition.
Improving Neonatal Care in Cuddalore
The facility will serve as a dedicated centre for the collection, screening, processing, pasteurization, storage, and distribution of donor human milk. This process will adhere to national guidelines to ensure the safety and efficacy of the milk. The primary goal of the human milk bank is to reduce neonatal morbidity and mortality rates by providing optimal nutrition during the critical early stages of life. Information was available with The Chenab Times that the milk bank would be particularly beneficial for low-birth weight infants, critically ill newborns, and orphaned infants whose mothers may not be able to produce sufficient milk.
According to Dr. R. Ramanathan, Professor and Head of the Department of Paediatrics, donor human milk is the best alternative when a mother’s own milk is not available. He highlighted its vital role in preventing infections and improving health outcomes among vulnerable neonates. The establishment of this milk bank is expected to significantly strengthen neonatal services within the district, offering vital support for the care of high-risk newborns admitted to the hospital.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance neonatal care across the country, addressing the challenges faced by infants who require specialized nutritional support. By ensuring access to pasteurized donor milk, the Cuddalore facility aims to bridge nutritional gaps and contribute to the overall well-being and survival rates of the most vulnerable infants in the region.
