SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested a man hailing from West Bengal and seized approximately 1.9 kilograms of suspected ganja along with an electronic weighing machine during a night-time checkpoint operation in the Kulgam district.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the operation took place during the intervening night when security forces established a checkpoint at Chatabal in Kulgam. The suspect, identified as Rakib Ahmad Khan, son of Mofjal Khan and a resident of Chandbita, West Bengal, was intercepted during routine checking.

During a thorough search of the individual’s belongings, authorities recovered 1 kilogram and 887 grams of a substance believed to be ganja. The seizure also included an electronic weighing machine, suggesting potential involvement in the distribution or sale of the contraband.

The recovery of a significant quantity of suspected narcotic substance and the apprehension of an individual from outside the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir highlights an inter-state dimension to the case. The accused was found in possession of the contraband in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

Following the discovery, a case has been registered under FIR No. 111/2026 at Police Station Kulgam. The charges fall under Sections 8 and 20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Authorities have initiated further investigation into the matter.

Officials stated that investigators are actively examining the origin of the recovered substance and its intended destination. They are also probing whether the arrested individual was acting alone or as part of a larger network involved in narcotics trafficking.

The Kulgam police are continuing their efforts to gather more information to dismantle any potential drug trafficking rings operating in the region. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the probe progresses.
