Background of the Incident
The ammonia gas leak occurred at a private seafood processing and export unit near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district. Initial reports indicated that the leak originated from a cooling pipe within the facility. As workers were housed within the factory premises, the leak rapidly affected a significant number of employees.
The incident prompted an immediate response from emergency services, including district administration officials, police personnel, fire and rescue services, and public health authorities. Affected workers exhibited symptoms consistent with ammonia exposure, such as breathing difficulties, coughing, and irritation to the eyes and respiratory system.
Investigative and Remedial Actions
In the wake of the tragedy, the Tamil Nadu government has initiated investigations into the cause of the leak. A cleanup operation to remove remnant ammonia at the site has been ordered by the Tiruvallur district collector. An expert team has been tasked with conducting this two-day operation, with stringent safety measures in place.
The district administration has implemented precautionary measures, including the closure of industries, houses, and shops within a 300-meter radius of the affected unit and the relocation of residents. Vehicle movement on NH 716 has also been restricted during the cleanup period. A control room has been established at the local revenue office, and an emergency helpline has been set up by the district administration to manage the situation.
Questions have been raised regarding the identification and communication processes for migrant workers and their families following the incident. The state government announced ex gratia assistance for the families of the deceased. Additionally, the Tamil Nadu government has arranged for rescued workers to be employed in other factories with full facilities.
