Jammu and Kashmir Police Arrest Man for Alleged Mosque Vandalism in Reasi

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested an individual in the Reasi district for allegedly vandalising a mosque and assaulting a person on its premises. The incident, which occurred at Sukhcha Masjid, has led to the registration of a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), police said.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the accused has been identified as Pyar Singh, son of Pritam Singh, a resident of Patian in Thuroo tehsil of Reasi district. Police stated that the arrest was made following the registration of a case at the Arnas Police Station. The specific sections under which the case has been filed include 331(6), 352, 115(2), 298, and 351(2) of the BNS.

Following the apprehension of the suspect, local authorities engaged with residents of the area. During these interactions, police assured the community that legal proceedings had been initiated to address the incident. They urged the public to uphold peace and communal harmony and to refrain from giving credence to rumours or misinformation that could potentially incite unrest.

Police reiterated their commitment to maintaining public order, emphasizing that any attempts to disrupt peace or communal harmony would be met with strict enforcement of the law. The authorities aim to ensure that such incidents are resolved through due legal process, promoting stability and trust within the community.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which came into effect on July 1, 2024, replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860. It aims to modernise and streamline criminal law in India. The sections invoked against the accused pertain to offences such as causing hurt, wrongful restraint, and intentionally outraging religious feelings, among others, reflecting the seriousness with which such incidents are treated by law enforcement agencies.

This incident in Reasi highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement in Jammu and Kashmir to address acts that could potentially harm communal harmony and public peace. The quick response and subsequent arrest signal the police’s dedication to swift justice and maintaining order in the region.
