The district of Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh is slated to gain an airport facility under the central government’s ambitious UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) regional connectivity scheme, a development announced by the Union Civil Aviation Minister.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the proposed airport, to be located in Mandasa mandal, is expected to transform Srikakulam into a significant aviation hub within the state. The initiative aims to enhance air connectivity and boost economic activity in the region.

UDAN Scheme’s Objective and Srikakulam’s Potential

The UDAN scheme, launched by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, seeks to connect unserved and underserved airports across India, making air travel more accessible and affordable for the common citizen. The development in Srikakulam aligns with this objective, promising to bring air travel closer to the populace of the northern coastal Andhra Pradesh district.

Officials envision that the new airport will not only facilitate easier travel for residents but also stimulate tourism and commerce. The increased accessibility is anticipated to attract investment and create employment opportunities, contributing to the overall socio-economic development of Srikakulam and its surrounding areas. The minister highlighted the potential for the district to become a “mini aviation hub,” underscoring the strategic importance of this project.

Opposition from CPI(M) Over Land Use Concerns

However, the proposed airport project has encountered opposition from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M). The party has voiced concerns that the development might pose a threat to the vital cashew and coconut cultivation belt in the Uddanam region, a significant agricultural area known for its produce.

According to reports, the CPI(M) has argued that the land designated for the airport could potentially impact agricultural land essential for the livelihoods of local farmers and the region’s economy. The party has called for a reconsideration of the site selection, emphasizing the need to protect agricultural resources while pursuing development initiatives.

The opposition raises a common challenge in infrastructure development projects, balancing the need for progress with the imperative to safeguard agricultural land and local ecological systems. The CPI(M)’s stance suggests that further dialogue and potential adjustments to the project plan might be necessary to address these environmental and economic concerns raised by the local community and political factions.

The Union Civil Aviation Minister’s announcement marks a significant step towards improving air connectivity in Andhra Pradesh. The focus now will be on the execution of the project and the management of the concerns raised by various stakeholders, particularly regarding the potential impact on the agricultural landscape of the Uddanam region.
