A series of moderate earthquakes struck the Marathwada region of Maharashtra in the early hours of Thursday, July 9, 2026, causing widespread panic among residents. The districts of Nanded, Hingoli, and Parbhani were the most affected, with tremors felt intermittently between 1:37 AM and 3:23 AM.

The strongest of the seismic events registered a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located near Sirli-Pangra Shinde village in Hingoli district. This significant tremor was strong enough to awaken residents, many of whom rushed out of their homes in fear. Subsequent tremors, measuring between 3.6 and 4.1 on the Richter scale, followed within a span of less than two hours, further unsettling the population.

Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that tremors were also felt in neighboring Nanded city and its rural areas, including the talukas of Ardhapur, Hadgaon, and Himayatnagar. Parts of Parbhani district also reported experiencing the seismic activity.

Preliminary Reports on Damage and Casualties

As of the latest reports, there have been no immediate confirmations of loss of life or significant damage to property. However, some instances of minor structural damage, such as cracks in houses and community halls, have been reported, particularly in Pangra Shinde village. District administrations in Hingoli and Parbhani are actively monitoring the situation and have urged citizens to remain calm and rely on official updates, while also appealing to them to avoid spreading rumors.

Historical Context of Seismic Activity

This is not the first instance of seismic activity in the Hingoli district. Earlier in April 2026, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake had struck parts of the district, causing minor cracks in some structures. Maharashtra, particularly the Marathwada region, occasionally experiences low to moderate seismic activity. While earthquakes of this intensity are not uncommon, they can still cause significant alarm among the local population due to the suddenness of the event and the potential for damage.

Disaster management teams are on alert, closely monitoring for any aftershocks. While earthquakes of this magnitude rarely cause widespread destruction, authorities are emphasizing preparedness and urging residents to follow safety guidelines during seismic events. These guidelines typically include staying calm, moving to open spaces if indoors and safe to do so, and avoiding the use of elevators. Emergency services have been put on standby to respond to any developing situation.
