A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Chennai for allegedly assaulting and threatening a woman after she refused to marry him. The incident follows a period of alleged relationship and a broken promise of marriage, leading to the woman filing a complaint with the Koyambedu All Women Police.
Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that the complainant, an IT employee residing in Koyambedu, met the accused, identified as Tamilarasan of Chitlapakkam, in 2023. According to police statements, Tamilarasan, who works for a private company, initiated contact through social media, and the two subsequently developed a relationship. During this time, Tamilarasan allegedly professed his love and promised to marry the woman. Believing his assurances, she entered into a relationship with him, which reportedly included several outings and a physical relationship.
The situation escalated when the woman visited Tamilarasan’s home with her mother to discuss marriage. While his family initially appeared to consent to the union, Tamilarasan later retracted his commitment and refused to marry her. Following his refusal, the woman reportedly approached him repeatedly seeking an explanation. During these interactions, Tamilarasan is accused of assaulting her and issuing death threats.
Based on the woman’s complaint, the Koyambedu All Women Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. Following a thorough investigation, a police team apprehended Tamilarasan. The police have booked him under sections of the BNS, which encompasses offenses related to assault and criminal intimidation.
This incident is part of a pattern of similar cases reported in Chennai and surrounding areas. In a separate case from October 2025, a man was arrested for assaulting a woman who had become pregnant under a false promise of marriage. He was arrested again after he allegedly met the woman near Puzhal lake, abused and assaulted her, and issued death threats. In August 2017, a man was arrested in T. Nagar for stabbing a woman with a knife in broad daylight after she refused his marriage proposal. More recently, in May 2026, Anna Nagar police arrested a 19-year-old man for assaulting a woman after she ended their relationship following a marriage proposal. Another incident from May 2026 involved a man in Tiruchi attacking a woman with a stone and strangling her after she expressed inability to marry him.
These recurring incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding relationships built on false promises and the subsequent violence or threats faced by women. Authorities emphasize the importance of reporting such incidents promptly to ensure timely intervention and legal action. The legal framework in Tamil Nadu, bolstered by provisions within the BNS and specific women’s harassment acts, aims to provide recourse for victims of such offenses.
