SRINAGAR: Residents of the Panthachowk area in Srinagar have voiced strong opposition to the proposed establishment of a new wine shop in their locality, staging a peaceful demonstration on Friday to urge authorities to revoke the decision. The protest highlights growing concerns among residents regarding the social impact of such outlets in residential neighbourhoods.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the demonstrators expressed apprehension over the placement of the liquor outlet, emphasizing that it is situated within a predominantly residential zone. A key point of contention for the residents is the proximity of the proposed site to several religious institutions, including mosques, which they argue makes the location unsuitable and contrary to local sentiments and religious values.

Protesters stated that the area is a densely populated residential neighbourhood. They appealed to the Jammu and Kashmir administration to reconsider and withhold permission for the wine shop. “We request the administration not to permit the opening of the wine shop in our locality. This is a residential area, and the presence of religious institutions nearby makes the proposed location unsuitable,” a participant in the protest communicated.

Residents further conveyed their expectation that the current administration would address public concerns, having reposed faith in its ability to do so. They expressed hope that the government would acknowledge their legitimate grievances and act in alignment with the aspirations of the local population. The demonstration, which remained peaceful throughout, saw participants making a concerted appeal for an immediate review of the decision by the relevant authorities to prevent the liquor outlet from becoming operational in the area.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has previously considered proposals for retail liquor vends across the Union Territory, a move that has drawn varied reactions. While proponents argue it could boost revenue and curb illegal liquor trade, opponents often cite potential negative impacts on social fabric, law and order, and public health.

In similar situations across other regions of India, concerns about the placement of liquor shops often revolve around their proximity to educational institutions, religious sites, and densely populated residential areas. Local authorities typically weigh economic benefits against community welfare and public order when making decisions on such proposals. The Panthachowk residents’ protest is indicative of a broader societal debate on the regulation of alcohol sales and their integration into urban and semi-urban landscapes, particularly in areas with a strong cultural and religious identity.

The specific details regarding the licensing process for such outlets in Jammu and Kashmir involve multiple administrative layers, including the Excise Department and potentially local administrative bodies. Decisions are usually based on applications, site inspections, and adherence to regulatory guidelines, which often include stipulations on distance from public places. The outcome of this particular protest is anticipated to be closely watched by residents and authorities alike.
