The 42-year-old woman, identified as Lakshmi (name changed), was admitted to the Regional Mental Hospital in Nagpur in March 2026. Suffering from mental illness, she spoke only Tamil and was unable to provide any information about her identity or origins, posing a significant challenge for hospital staff, police, and government officials involved in her case. The complexity of the situation was amplified by the fact that her husband had passed away shortly after her disappearance, and her family had resigned themselves to the belief that she was deceased.
The breakthrough in identifying Lakshmi and initiating the search for her family came through the use of Google Translate. Hospital staff utilized the translation tool to decipher snippets of information Lakshmi conveyed, gradually piecing together details that pointed towards her home in Tamil Nadu. This technological aid was crucial in overcoming the language barrier that had initially rendered communication nearly impossible.
Cross-State Search and Emotional Reunion
The painstaking search spanned across three states: Maharashtra, where she was found; Andhra Pradesh, where legal officers from the state assisted in interpretation; and Tamil Nadu, her home state. After months of concerted effort, involving hospital staff, police, government officials, and an NGO, Lakshmi was finally reunited with her son.
The reunion marked the end of a long period of uncertainty and grief for her family. Her son expressed profound joy, stating that seeing his mother alive after more than two-and-a-half years was the happiest moment of his life. He recounted the immense pain of losing his mother, especially after his father’s passing, and how the family had accepted her as gone.

This case highlights the transformative impact of technology, such as Google Translate, in modern-day social work and tracing operations. The ability to overcome language barriers has become increasingly vital in reuniting lost individuals with their families, especially in cases involving mental illness or severe disorientation where communication is severely compromised.

In one case from May 2023, Google Translate helped police in Uttarakhand reunite a 68-year-old Telugu-speaking woman, who had gone missing while returning from Kedarnath, with her family.
