Five tourists from Telangana were rescued after being swept into the sea at Visakhapatnam’s RK Beach on Saturday. The incident occurred when the group of friends were swimming, and two of them were reportedly pulled away by strong waves.
Lifeguards Respond Swiftly to Rescue Tourists
Lifeguards of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) were on duty at RK Beach and immediately responded to the emergency. M. Dhanaraju and M. Naveen, the lifeguards on duty, swiftly entered the water with their equipment and successfully rescued the two individuals who were in distress.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the group of five friends from Telangana were on a recreational trip to Visakhapatnam. While enjoying their time at the popular RK Beach, they ventured into the water for a swim. However, strong currents present at the beach are known to pose a significant risk, and two members of the group were caught by a sudden surge of waves, pulling them further into the sea.
Safety Concerns at RK Beach
The swift action of the lifeguards prevented a potential tragedy. Following the rescue, the group received counselling from the police. Officials have reiterated the dangers present at RK Beach, despite the installation of warning boards by the GVMC. Visitors are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and refrain from swimming in the sea to ensure their safety.
RK Beach, a popular tourist destination in Visakhapatnam, has unfortunately seen similar incidents in the past. In September 2024, two tourists were rescued by GVMC lifeguards from drowning at the same beach. Earlier in January 2022, four revellers from Hyderabad and Odisha drowned in separate incidents at RK Beach. In another unfortunate event in March 2022, two students drowned at the beach while swimming, with one other student being rescued.
These recurring incidents highlight the persistent risks associated with venturing into the sea at RK Beach, particularly due to unpredictable currents. Authorities continue to urge the public to adhere to safety guidelines and be aware of the potential dangers.
